Art's Guide 2008 Hello, everyone! Sorry I haven't updated my site
in a while. I have been very busy; plus, the
last time I tried to log on to my site my
internet failed. Anyhoo... I have some big news,
You Guys! Do you remember how in November I told
you that I met a member of the Art's Council and
he wanted me to enter a contest? Well, the
contest he wanted me to enter was to compete for
the cover of the Art's Guide, a spot of the
winner's choice at the Belmont Gallery for an
upcoming event, and an article about the winner
in the spring issue of Pensacola Magazine. I was
very excited, but once I recieved the the contest
guidelines and rules I only had a short time to
get the shot I would enter (I wanted it to be
something new; not something I had taken
already.) The theme was supposed to
be "Modern." Okay, I thought to myself. What
exactly does that mean? Maybe I'm wrong,
but "Modern" seemed kind of vague, maybe broad is
a better word. Nevertheless, I was determined to
do my best to impress the judges. I immediately
thought of the Graffiti Bridge downtown as a
symbol of Pensacola's art. I had a vision of the
perfect photograph in my head; if only I could
communicate that onto film (even though I am
digital...). That Friday, I got my best friend
to go to the Bridge with me and pose for me. I
would have gotten some great shots, but even
though my camera was mounted on a tripod, a
strong wind was shaking the camera. The results
were a bunch of blurry photos. I didn't give up
though. The next day, me and my mom went back
out to the Bridge to try again without a model.
I ended up going up on top of it and found some
great plantlife. There were these beautiful
purplish red leaves growing on the ground that I
just knew would make a perfect contrast to the
bright bridge. My mom laughed at me as I ripped
them out of the ground and "posed" them in
different places on the wall. I found some other
flowers and such as well that I photographed,
thinking how great the contrasty, saturated photo
could look. I hoped and prayed that the images
would look just as good on my computer screen as
they did on the camera LCD screen. It was
probably two days later that I sent them off to
be judged. After a couple of days of holding my
breath and waiting, I pretty much decided that I
hadn't won, but that someone older and more
experienced had taken the prize. That morning,
my mom gave a "pep talk" of sorts, telling me
that I probably didn't win, but that it was okay
because I still had a lot to learn and that it
was a compliment to have been asked. I don't
know if I mentioned this, but it was my best
friend's dad who was the reason the Art's Council
guy even came in at Gallery Night and saw me.
This is relevant because when I got to school,
Lindsey ran up to me telling me she knew who had
won the contest. Even though I knew it wouldn't
be me, I was still interested to know the winner
(last year it was painter Nina Fritz). She
exclaimed that it was I. I honestly didn't
believe her at first, telling her to quit lying
and tell me who really had won. But each time I
pressed for the truth she told me it was I, until
finally I had to believe her! I guess I just
made this a really long, boring, and drawn-out
story, but it's too late to point that out now
because now you've probably read it all ready and
it was pointless to say. Whoo! That was
definitely a run-on! Sorry! Anyhoo.. I am super
excited right now! The Art's Guide should be out
sometime in February. By the way, the judging
was blind (meaning when they judged the images,
they had no idea who's was who's) and I beat out
the photography proffessor at UWF! Sorry, had to
add that. See you guys later. (As I find out
about it, I'll post info on the Bellmont event.)

SO COOL!
That's awsome! I had a feeling that you would
win, but I didn't know that you beat out the
University of West Florida photography
proffesor! You're a great photographer. Keep
gettin better, and I hope that I will become as
goos as you some day.
peace out,
Brandon S.

WAY COOL
So that is really cool, but I wanted to tell you
that I saw the magazine, and your picture was
obviously the best, some of the others just took
pictures of modern art not the art that is in
modern Pensacola. Your picture was so cool, the
angle was neat and it was overall really good.
Keep up the good work.
